Yesterdays big PS3 release was Rainbow 6: Vegas 2. Offline it's basically the last game with a bit of a polish. Not much mind, there are some very basic textures on display here. Still it's Rainbow 6, so you know what to expect. I am into the 3rd Act and it plays pretty well. A nice addition is being able to earn character XP offline as well as online. Which is lucky, because playing online is mostly impossible at the moment.
Ok first things first. The game already has a 52mb patch waiting for you the first time you boot it up. That doesn't exactly fill me with confidence. But there are some welcome online features. I can see my Friends List, as well as read and create messages. That's nice, and something that more games should offer. So all is well until you actually try to play a game. And then it all falls down.
At the moment it is next to impossible to play online. "Server is already at capacity" and "Unable to connect to game" messages will be burned into you retina as you slowly realise that something is very, very wrong. Ok, so no games with the Great Unwashed. Maybe a private game will be better. Sort of. Not.
I hosted a co-op Terrorist Hunt game with both slots set to Private. Smashing. Now to invite a friend. Oddly, there doesn't seem to be a way of doing that until the game has started. Which is wierd. Still, I did get a couple of good games in before we got disconnected a few times and decided to go play CoD4 instead. To get lots of disconnections.
What is so hard about making a game work properly over PSN? I realise that it's not Xbox Live and that peer to peer games are always a bit more temperamental, but this game is broken. Last year Ubi were heavily criticised for porting the 360 version of the original Vegas over to PS3 complete with all the bugs that had been subsequently patched over XBL. It looks like Vegas 2 is not going to win Ubi any new fans. Hopefully a patch will be forthcoming, but they better fix this soon. Piss poor Ubi, piss poor.

I AGREE 100% ITS A SHAME TOO BECAUSE THE 2 MINUTES YOU GET BEFORE THE SERVER CRASHES IS ACTUALLY FUN. THATS IF YOUR LUCKY ENOUGH TO JOIN. YUP GONNA BEAT THE CAMPAIGN AND TRADE IT IN FOR SOMETHING LESS FRUSTERATING.WAY TO GO UBISUCK
Why are games poor on PSN? Ask Sony, it's their system, not Ubi.
Poor on the PSN???? I play all of my games fine over the PSN... all of them except R6V2, that is. I'm guessing its not sony's fault.

The PSN is not at fault here because I am able to play any other online game perfectly fine. I can even play RSV1 online with no problems. But RSV2 is a huge issue. I will not be buying anymore games that are "Developed" by Ubisoft until I hear an all clear from at least 10 of my PSN buddies.
As for the fanboys claiming its PSN's fault its not and it is proven by every other game working perfectly fine on the PSN. RSV2 is the only game with an issue and I think its because of Ubisoft's development team screwing something up in the code.
The funny thing is that I can host a game and it appears in the server but no traffic generates at all when people try to join my game. (Basically meaning that something in the code is messed up because I am not receiving any pakcets at all from them.) That is a code problem and not a server problem. If it were a server problem the traffic monitor would at least generate a spike instead of displaying a "flatline."
BUY AN XBOX 360 YOU WILL NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM AND YOU CAN PLAY ONLINE ALL DAY LONG LOL!
Having all 3 consoles, I perfer to play on the PS3 since it is the better of all the 3 next-gen systems out there. I wish I had of bought this title for my Xbox360 since this has to be the worse online title for the PS3 period. The online play should have been more throughly tested before this piece of garbage was released to the PS3 community. I can not understand why a company as big as Ubisoft does not have dedicated servers for its game like Insomniac has for Resistance Fall of Man and Bungie has for Halo 2 & 3. This will be the last Ubisoft title I will be buying unless they clean up their act. I was looking forward to purchasing Haze also by Ubisoft but I will stay away from all Ubisoft products until they can write better network/server/client codes for its games. Hopefully they can hire better programmers or source out the network play portions of their games so they can work properly. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is a complete abortion for online for the PS3.
